What is a Hydrocarbon Fire?
Hydrocarbon fires, or pool fires, are fires that burn above a pool of vaporizing hydrocarbon fuel and have a very rapid heat rise. A pool fire can compromise the structural integrity of typical steel work used in oil and gas facilities in a matter of minutes. Jet fires are a particular group of hydrocarbon fuelled fires resulting from the combustion of fuel that is continuously released under high pressure. Jet fires represent a significant risk for offshore installations due to the high heat fluxes and erosive forces that they produce.
