Protecting Amsterdam’s Award-Winning IJburg Bridges

The IJburg Bridges in Amsterdam have been named the winner of the 2025 Construsoft BIM Award in the Infrastructure Projects category.
For the development of the IJburg district, Smulders delivered the steelwork for two bridges. A total of 24,810 liters of International® protective coatings were used during production to protect the bridges’ steel structures.

Complex design, high-performance protection
 

The IJburg district in Amsterdam is undergoing significant urban development, requiring reliable and high-quality infrastructure. Smulders, specialists in steel construction, were responsible for delivering the steelwork for two bridges as part of this project.

Due to their intricate design and construction, a carefully specified coating system was essential. A range of International® protective coatings was applied to provide long-term corrosion protection and deliver a durable, high-quality finish.

The coating work was carried out over a six-month period, from 13 November 2023 (week 46) to 13 May 2024 (week 20).

The project has since been praised for its technical precision, complex design, and craftsmanship. Recognized as one of the highlights of the 2025 Construsoft BIM Awards, the jury commended the IJburg Bridges for their exceptional quality and collaboration:
