First Deepwater offshore wind energy project in Guangdong Province

AkzoNobel’s protective coatings from its International range are part of building the first deepwater offshore wind power projects in Guangdong Province.

The 1000 MW Yuedean Quingzhou projects 1 and 2, once completed, will be capable of providing around 4.3 billion KWH of clean energy generation per year. Alongside that, the project will save roughly 1.27 million tons of standard coal consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.28 million tons per year (when compared with coal-fired power plants of the same scale). A project of this size and location brings with it several challenges which were all overcome by using a market leading offshore coatings brand. 

Some 350,000 litres of Interzinc 52, Intergard 475HS, Interfine 878, and Chartek 1709 from our International® product range are being used on the steel substation, with Interdur 8844 being used on the foundation.

First Deepwater offshore wind energy project in Guangdong Province

Background information

Yuedean Qingzhou is an offshore wind farm being developed in two phases - Qingzhou 1 and 2 and collectively they will be the first deepwater offshore wind power projects in Guangdong Province (invested by Guangdong Energy Group).

As a whole, the project consists of 92 offshore wind turbines (37 are part of Qingzhou 1 and 55 are part of Qingzhou 2), alongside a 500 kV offshore substation and an onshore control center, and it represents a multi-billion euro investment. AkzoNobel’s International® brand was chosen because of the total global solutions we can offer and our continued trusted partnership and expertise.

 

The project

AkzoNobel was chosen to provide protective coating solutions for the steel substation and the foundation. 

Products such as Interzinc® 52 alongside Intergard® 475HS and Interfine® 878 from International® ensure Yuedean Qingzhou’s wind energy assets are kept in optimum condition, providing essential corrosion protection and long-term structural integrity. 

Interzinc® 52 provides excellent corrosion resistance, barrier protection, and withstands the conditions commonly encountered on offshore structures. These benefits lead to less costly repairs and touch-ups.

The results

This specific project development is especially important given its size, location, and continuing the positive reputation of the International® product range. It marks an important milestone in AkzoNobel’s efforts to become market leader for offshore wind in China.

Alongside providing 4.3 billion KWH of clean energy generation per year, the project is also equivalent to reconstructing about 4,500 hectares of forest. This project will also help make positive contributions to promoting high-quality development in western Guangdong and help the area build a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system. 

As a whole, offshore wind farms contribute to the national “dual carbon” strategic goal and these wind farms in particular signify the development of far-reaching offshore and large-capacity offshore wind power projects in Guangdong and the whole country.
